Unibrow 101: How To Trim Your Eyebrows
Alright fellas, it’s time to take a look in the mirror and ask yourselves a few important questions. Does it look like a caterpillar is perched above your eyes? Is there no gap of skin between those wispy eye mustaches? If so, it might be time to take a hard look at givin’ those ol’ brows a good bushwhack. It’s not rocket science, but it does take some technique. Here’s how to do it right.
Tip 1: Be aware of the shape of your own eyebrows
It might sound simple, but one of the biggest blockers to learning how to properly and confidently trimming your own eyebrows is knowing the correct shape you are going for. Obviously want to keep those things in check but you reeeaaalllyyy want to avoid having them look overly-manicured. Check out this handy illustration for a helpful guide that shows some of the most common eyebrow shapes for men. Take a minute and see if you can find yours. One you’ve got it, use that as a guide for how your brows should look. Ultimately you want them to stay in their natural vibe and not be overdone or overly-shaped.
Tip 2: Get the right tools
Just like any sort of grooming or cutting, you’ve got to have the right tools. A small pair of nail or grooming scissors work best and will give you the most control when you trim. Alternatively, you can use a small electric beard trimmer or body groomer, just make sure to remove the guard and trim the edges directly rather than trying to buzz the whole eyebrow with the guard on.
Tip 4: Trim carefully
Start with trimming any long or overgrown hairs (just like you’re trimming the edge of your own hair) and evening things out. Technique wise, push up on the hairs to see what’s long enough to be trimmed. As you trim down, you’ll be getting rid of excess weight from your brows. Doing so will automatically provide a cleaner, neater appearance. Then, finish by removing any rogue hairs with tweezers. Start slowly and trim lightly, you can’t bring that hair back if you get too aggressive.
Tip 5: Address that unibrow
The importance of turning that unibrow into two independent entities can’t be understated. Once you’re done trimming your brows themselves, take your razor or beard trimmer and shave/buzz that small patch above the bridge of your nose. Don’t get too aggressive to the right or left, just directly in between. If that thicket is pretty heavy, don’t be afraid to seek some professional help and get it waxed (see our next tip).
Tip 6: There’s no shame in professional help
We get it, eyebrow trimming can be intimidating and even downright scary for a lot of people. If you’ve got exceptionally thick, heavy brows or are just nervous, let the pros handle it. This can be as simple as having your barber trim you down next time you get a cut or visiting an eyebrow specialist. Plus, if your unibrow really needs some help (ie - a quick wax) that’s the place to get it done. Worried about the price? Don’t be. Eyebrow shaping is actually very cheap, costing anywhere between $8- $50 depending on your location and specialist.
