You've probably been washing your hair for years without giving it a second thought. Squeeze, lather, rinse — even repeat if things are looking questionable. But what does shampoo do to your hair that regular water can't?
Turns out, there's a lot more going on in that bottle (and on your head) than just good-smelling suds. We're breaking down what shampoo is, how it tackles hair and scalp grime, and what your freshly washed locks communicate about your overall routine.
Want to treat your hair right? Read on for the deets about washing it.
Shampoo cleans your hair and scalp. The oil (sebum) your scalp produces, plus dirt, sweat, and product residue hang around up there throughout the day. And since oily substances like sebum don't mix well with water, rinsing your noggin just isn't enough to send all that grime packing.
The heavy lifters in shampoo are called surfactants. These cleansing ingredients have an oil-loving side that interacts with sebum and a water-loving side that interacts with H2O. They reduce tension at the oil-water and hair-water levels, removing oily dirt from your strands. Once you rinse, the shower spray carries all that loosened grossness down the drain instead of leaving it camped out on your head.
Science: 1. Greasy mop: 0.
Flip over a bottle of shampoo, and the product label might look like it was written in a foreign language. But every ingredient has a job, whether it's cleaning your hair or improving how it feels after you wash it. While the surfactants do the heavy duty cleansing, here are some of the supporting players in shampoo chemistry.
The conditioning agents in shampoo make freshly washed hair easier to manage. These can be traditional silicones or a combination of an emulsifier and a lightweight plant oil like jojoba. They deposit along the hair shaft, creating a smoother surface and reducing friction between your strands, which makes your hair feel softer and easier to comb through.
These ingredients include thickeners that give shampoo the right consistency and preservatives that keep the formula fresh. This behind-the-scenes crew doesn't have a glamorous job, but somebody's gotta do it.
Some ingredients are there more for the experience. Fragrance makes shampoo smell good. Colorants and opacifying or pearlescent ingredients make the product thick, shiny, and colorful. These additions are fun for self-care, but they're not necessary for hauling grease off your head.
Your hair puts up with a lot between wash days. Everyday stuff settles onto your strands and scalp. Along with the typical oil and sweat that happens as time passes, that fresh-out-the-shower feeling fades fast. Here are the usual suspects crashing the clean-hair party.
It might sound a bit gross, but your scalp naturally sheds dead skin cells. These collect alongside sebum, sweat, and other debris. Know what removes them? Washing your hair regularly.
You don't need to roll around in the dirt to bring some of the outside world home on your head. Dust, pollen, and even secondhand smoke stick to your hair throughout the day. And when you add all this to your scalp's natural oils, hitting the shower becomes necessary.
Pomades, waxes, and gels are designed to stick around in your hair long enough to do their job. Thanks to this, some of the ingredients leave behind residue on your hair and scalp. That leftover product joins forces with oil and other debris to create buildup in your hair between washes. So, when your Sunday mane feels coated or weighed down, Saturday's date-night slickback might be to blame.
A good hair washing routine does more than just reset your post-gym funk. It clears away everything your hair collects between washes, helping your scalp and strands feel fresh and light. Here are three reasons why you need to get in there and scrub every once in a while, even if you're not feelin' it.
Your scalp constantly deals with sebum, sweat, and dead skin cells. Shampoo washes all that away, leaving your hair and scalp cleaner. It's pretty straightforward.
When oil, dirt, and residue collect on your strands, your hair starts feeling and looking a little past its prime. Shampoo's surfactants loosen and carry away that unwanted grime. And once all that extra baggage heads down the drain, your hair feels less weighed down and looks less greasy. Just consider it a reset button.
Your styling routine can leave behind more than just a killer hair day. Products like gels and waxes leave behind buildup that can cause your hair to look flat and lifeless. Shampoo washes that leftover residue away, so your strands have some bounce again.
If more bubbles, harder scrubbing, and frequent washing sound like the recipe for a legendary mane, think again. A few things we tend to interpret as signs of an extra-good wash may do more harm than good.
A head full of glorious lather might feel like proof your shampoo's crushing it. But more bubbles don't automatically mean better cleaning; that's actually a common hair myth. Surfactants do the dirty work, loosening oil, dirt, and other grime so the water can carry it away when you rinse.
Foam is more a side effect of your shampoo doing its thing, and how much you get changes based on the ingredients in your formula and even your water. So, don't judge your wash by the size of your suds mountain, because less foam can still mean plenty of clean.
When you drag your fingers across your freshly washed hair and hear that telltale squeak, it's tempting to think you've achieved peak clean. In reality, you've probably removed more of your hair's natural oils than you needed to. These oils help coat your hair, and when you scrub all of them away, your strands can feel rougher in the long run.
Washing your hair more often doesn't automatically mean it stays fresh longer. Scrubbing it removes sebum from your hair and scalp. But you don't just stop producing oil in between washes. Even if you shower daily, grease can still become noticeable quickly, especially if you have fine strands.
Good hair care really isn't complicated. The right shampoo clears away excess oil, grime, and buildup, giving your hair and scalp a fresh start and your mane a fighting chance at looking its best.

Most people use conditioner after shampooing. Skipping this step won't summon the hair police. But conditioner coats your strands to seal in moisture and reduce tangles, which makes for easier combing.
That depends on your hair type. Sulfates are just one type of surfactant. Sulfate-free shampoos use different surfactants that some people find work better for their hair. If you have dyed, chemically treated, or coarse hair, sulfate-free shampoos can keep your hair feeling smoother. At Dr. Squatch, all of our natural shampoos are sulfate-free.
