Your workout bag doesn’t need to be Batman’s utility belt. But packing the right things ahead of time can make your trips to the gym a little easier. You’ll arrive ready to train, with everything you need to stay hydrated during and clean up properly when the last rep is done.
More importantly, you’re not relying on whatever random assortment of clothes and half-empty toiletries happened to make it into your bag that morning — and there’s no Alfred Pennyworth to blame for packing the wrong things.
If you’re wondering what to put in a gym bag, we’ll break down the gym bag essentials men should keep on hand. With this handy guide, you’ll spend more time pumping iron and less time wondering what you forgot in the parking lot.
You don’t need a second wardrobe in your gym bag, but a few clothing basics can save you from training in the wrong gear.
Pack a workout top and shorts or pants if you’re going to the gym from work or elsewhere. If you shower afterward, bring clean clothes for the trip home, too. Keeping sweaty gear in a separate laundry bag also stops it from mingling with everything else, and you can stop wondering why your workout tees keep developing yellow armpit stains.
And if you have longer hair, keep one or two hair ties or headbands in your bag to stop it falling into your face mid-set.
Choose training shoes that suit the session. Running, lifting, and studio workouts usually require different shoes, so pack for the day. For example, weightlifting shoes usually have flatter soles than running shoes for stability, so your feet stay locked in place during reps.
Speaking of sneakers, always keep a spare pair or two of socks tucked away. They take up almost no space in your workout bag and are probably the easiest thing to forget.
And if you like to shower or hit the sauna post-workout, pack some slides that can handle wet locker room floors. The last thing you want after a great workout is a raging case of athlete’s foot.
A well-stocked duffel should fuel your workout, too. After all, your water bottle may not have biceps, but it’s still pulling its weight. Make sure to take these essentials along:
Reusable water bottle: Keep water within reach so you can replace fluids lost through sweat during training instead of relying on occasional trips to the fountain.
Pre-workout snack or energy bar: If it’s been a while since you ate, an easy-to-digest, carbohydrate-rich snack like a banana or energy bar can provide quick fuel for your workout.
Electrolytes: Plain water is generally enough for shorter workouts, but an electrolyte drink or mix can help during longer, harder sessions — especially endurance training or workouts where you’re sweating heavily. Electrolytes restore sodium in your body, which replaces some of what’s lost through sweat.
Post-workout protein source: A shaker bottle with protein powder or another portable protein-rich snack helps if you aren’t having a meal soon after your workout. Protein provides amino acids that support muscle growth, while carbs replenish glycogen (sugar) stores that deplete during exercise. Restoring glycogen helps restore energy after prolonged running, cycling, or similar high-intensity activities.
Pack a small absorbent towel for wiping sweat from yourself and equipment during your workout. We also recommend bringing a larger body towel if you plan to shower afterward, otherwise you might finish your wash and discover the only towel you had already spent an hour getting intimately acquainted with the dumbbells.
Your phone already does enough jobs to qualify for employee benefits, but a couple of dedicated tech essentials can make workouts easier to focus on and track.
Music or a podcast can block out distractions and help you settle into your workout (even if it’s Nickelback — we aren’t here to judge). If you use wireless headphones, keep them charged or pack a charging cable, as discovering you only have 2% battery right before leg day is its own endurance test.
This is optional, but you can use any kind of fitness wearable like a WHOOP band or an Apple Watch to record workout data like calories burnt, heart rate, or steps. You can quantify and compare sessions over time to measure progress without relying entirely on memory, even if you think you went harder on Monday.
Gym gear and certain accessories can take up a lot of space and sometimes be unnecessary, so prioritize the ones that solve an actual problem during your workouts rather than collecting equipment like you’re assembling the Avengers. Here are a few ideas.
If you use a locker, bring your own lock so your wallet, keys, and phone stay secured while you train. You can concentrate on your sets instead of wondering whether your backpack has embarked on a solo adventure.
They weigh very little but are incredibly useful for warm-ups, mobility work, and adding resistance to accessory exercises. Keeping a band in your bag also gives you another workout option when the equipment you want is occupied by the biggest guy in the gym and you’re too afraid to ask (even though they’re usually the sweetest people around). And if your mobility or floor work needs more room than a stretching mat at the gym provides, bring your own yoga mat, too.
Weightlifting gloves can make bars and dumbbells more comfortable to hold by putting a layer between your hands and the equipment. They also provide extra traction when your palms get sweaty. But if you prefer lifting bare-handed, save the bag space and feel free to add to your callus collection. If a weightlifting belt or lifting straps are already part of your training regimen, pack them on the days your program calls for heavy lifting rather than carrying them around all week.
A post-workout shower washes away the sweat and oil left on your skin after training, so this is one part of your gym bag checklist worth taking seriously. Keep the routine compact with products that travel well instead of hauling your entire shower shelf around. Here are a few essentials.
A solid bar of natural soap is gentle on your skin but tough on dirt, sweat, and grease. Keep it in a ventilated soap case so it can dry between uses, and give it some air when you get home.
If you prefer liquid cleanser, transfer some natural body wash into a travel-size bottle and keep it in a separate toiletry bag. You’ll have enough for several post-workout showers without lugging around the bathroom equivalent of a gallon jug.
Sweat, chalk, and grime build up during a workout, making a face wash a nonnegotiable part of your kit. Your bar soap can pull double-duty here, or grab a gentle cleanser formulated for your face to clean up all that debris.
If you worked up a sweat, you’ll want to wash and condition your hair, too. Stock your bag with a Dr. Squatch’s hair care kit. It’s got you covered with a sulfate-free cleanser for a gentle clean and a natural conditioner with nourishing plant oils to keep your strands smooth.
A shower handles the workout, but a natural deodorant helps you re-enter society afterward without smelling like Shrek. Keep one in your bag and apply it once you’re clean and dry, especially if you’re heading straight to work or dinner afterward.
Gel and spray deos tend to fare better in a sports bag that gets thrown around, since traditional sticks might crack, crumble, or soften in the heat. Dr. Squatch’s deodorant range includes naturally derived spray and gel deodorants, so you can pack bag-friendly options without worrying about your post-workout smell becoming your signature scent.
Not everybody needs shaving gear among their gym bag necessities, so consider this an optional elective rather than required reading. But if you regularly shave after training or want to clean up before work or an evening out, the timing actually works in your favor. The warm water for your post-workout shower preps your skin for a clean shave. Pack a razor and some shaving cream or butter to get the job done on the go.
If the gym shower is followed by somewhere other than home — and more specifically, your couch — bring a brush to quickly tidy short, straight hair. A wide-tooth comb is better for damp, thick, or curly hair, since it detangles more gently and reduces unnecessary tugging on wet strands. Either takes up very little room in your bag, but they can save you from looking like an electrocuted hedgehog.
A packed gym bag with all the must-haves works like a good spotter; it has your back when you need it. Once you’ve got your workout gear covered, stock the grooming side with Dr. Squatch essentials so you leave the gym feeling confident for whatever comes next.
Prep for your post-workout shower with a natural bar soap or body wash and a good face wash. For dirty locks, explore Dr. Squatch Hair Care Kits to find your perfect shampoo and conditioner pairing. And if you need a shave, grab some shave butter and a soothing post shave for a baby smooth finish. Top it off with a moisturizing lotion to help your skin feel its best and natural deodorant to keep your pits smelling fresh.
Pack smart with Dr. Squatch, because “fresh from the gym” should describe your schedule, not your smell.
